“He gives grace to the afflicted.” Proverbs 3:34
“The Lord is near to the broken hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Ps. 34:18
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (or sorrows).” Ps. 147:3
“For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, I dwell on a high and holy place, and with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15
“..He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners….to comfort all who mourn.” Isaiah 61:1,2
“For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.” 2 Cor. 1:5
“But God, who comforts the depressed (or downcast), comforted us…” 2 Cor. 7:6
The comfort and grace the Lord has for us is beyond comprehension. When we hear of or see someone going through tremendously difficult circumstances, losses, sickness, cancer, devastation or death, we can’t help wonder, How are they getting through this? Or, How will I get through this?
“The eternal God is a refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Deut. 33:27
The unseen arms of a Loving God hold up, sustain, and embrace the hurting. As loving Father, sacrificial Son, and ever-present Comforter, God is with us and gives grace, strength, comfort, and healing for the broken-hearted. Freely.
Even as I write, a gathering of friends and family of Mary Barrett are both remembering and celebrating the life of a beautiful woman and worshipper. She experienced first hand God’s grace through fire, as she battled with cancer over the past year. And now those closest to her will need the fullness of God’s grace to fill the void. And He is able.
“God is able to make all grace abound to you…” 2 Cor. 9:8
“Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all we ask or think, according to the power that works withing us…” Ephesians 3:20
“…He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.” Hebrews 2:18
All of us have our sorrows. God knows exactly what they are and He longs to comfort us. He’s not austere, distant, or unfeeling as many may believe. He loves us. He is on our side. Romans 8:31 proclaims this best: “What shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?” God is for us!
“The Lord is for me; I will not fear; What can man do to me?” Psalm 118:6
Today, without fear or hesitation, bring you broken heart, your crushed spirit, your wounds, tears, sickness, suffering, mourning, any and everything that is troubling you, to your merciful Father, the God of all Comfort. He begs us to come to Him. He cries out to us,
“Do not fear, for I am with you, Do not anxiously look around you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand!” Isaiah 41:10
“Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of Grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 5:16
