God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen!!

I’ve chosen God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen for my Christmas Song and Gift to you!!  Listen to a great version by Mercy Me in the Music Box!

The words of this song are a bit lost in translation for the 21st century.  “Rest” and “Merry” just don’t mean the same thing as they did in the 15th century when it was written.  So, this is not a song about some Merry Gentlemen being commanded to get some rest  🙂

The phrase, rest you merry loosely means “May God Keep You Merry!”  Additionally, rest, is derived from the Latin meaning, to stand firm, and merry often meant ‘mighty’ (like Robin Hood’s “merry” men). So the song is actually exhorting people to know and proclaim God’s ability to help us Stand Firm and be Mighty for the Lord!   As it says in Romans 16:25:

Now all glory to God, who is able to make you strong, just as my Good News says. This message about Jesus Christ has revealed his plan for you, a plan kept secret from the beginning of time.  (TLB)

May you be merry, mighty, assured, and standing firm, knowing that Jesus was born to be your Saviour!

God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen

God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan’s power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

 In Bethlehem, in Israel,
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn
The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed Angel came;
And unto certain Shepherds
Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

“Fear not then,” said the Angel,
“Let nothing you affright,
This day is born a Saviour
Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan’s power and might.”
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

And when they came to Bethlehem
Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found Him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His Mother Mary kneeling down,
Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas
All other doth deface.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!

The Ultimate Valentine

A love song for eternity….from the Author of true love, sacrificial giving, friendship, marriage, family, and all that is wonderful…Love Himself, God.

The Love of God
by Frederick Lehman

The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell,
It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win:
His erring child, He reconciled and pardoned from his sin.

Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill and every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry,
Nor could the scroll contain the whole tho’ stretched from sky to sky!

O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall for evermore endure,
The saints’ and angels’ song!”

Mercy Me sings this so beautifully on their CD, Spoken For.   If you have a few minutes, listen to this love song in the Blue Box to the right.  Just click on the Box, wait 10 secs for the song to upload, click play….then, rest in His love.

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world so that we might live through Him.

This is love:  not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. ”
1 John 4:9,10 NIV

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal Life.”
John 3:16 NIV

GOD LOVES YOU!!

Word of God Speak

I want to share a soothing song by Mercy Me, called “Word of God Speak.”  In addition to be comforting, I thought it might connect the dots between the discussion on God’s Word and my little post on the noise of the world.  Once again, you can listen to the song as you read, by clicking on the blue Music Box to the right (it’s the third song…wait a few seconds, then click on the arrow to play.)  I’ve placed several songs in the Box, so you can listen to any or all you wish..

Word of God Speak

I’m finding myself at a loss for words

and the funny thing is, it’s okay

The last thing I need is, to be heard

But to hear what You would say.

Chorus:

Oh word of God speak

Would You pour down like rain

Washing my eyes to see

Your majesty

To be still and know

That You’re in this place

Please let me stay and rest

In Your Holiness

Word of God speak.

I’m finding myself in the midst of You

Beyond the music, beyond the noise

All that I need is to be with You

And in the quiet, hear Your voice..

(Chorus repeats twice)

Finding myself at a loss for words…and the funny things is…..its okay.”
