A Borrowed Prayer

Every year I usally write two prayers, as one year ends and another begins.  One usually is filled with tremendous thanks for God’s faithfulness; the other expresses my frail, yet growing, trust in the Lord for the year ahead (with a few personal requests thrown in :-).

But for today, I share a borrowed prayer, from The Valley of Vision [1], a collection of Puritan prayers. and devotions.  These prayers go far beyond my feeble skills to communicate humble thanks and dedication to the One who already knows my days before there is one of them!

O Lord,

Length of days does not profit me
except the days are passed in Thy presence
                                                        in Thy service,
                                                       and to Thy Glory.

Give me a grace that precedes,
follows,
guides,
sustains,
sanctifies,
aids every hour,
that I may not be one moment apart from Thee,

but may rely on Thy Spirit
to supply every thought,
speak every word,
direct every step,
prosper every work,
build up every mote of faith,
and give me a desire,
to show forth Thy praise;
testify Thy Love,
advance Thy Kingdom.

I launch my bark on the unknown waters of this year,
with Thee, O Father, as my harbour,
Thee, O Son, at my helm,
Thee, O Holy Spirit, filing my sails.

Guide me to heaven with my loins girt,
my lamp burning,
my ear open to Thy call,
my heart full of love,
my soul free.

Give me Thy grace to sanctify me,
Thy comforts to cheer,
Thy wisdom to teach,
Thy right hand to guide,
Thy counsel to instruct,
Thy law to judge
Thy presence to stabilize.

May Thy fear be my awe,
Thy triumphs my joy!

  1. What a beautiful prayer! I will surely copy it in my journal as my prayer for this new year, too!

Thanks for sharing it on your blog.

Have a blessed year ahead of you, dear Linda!

    Love

  2. Hi Linda

    Happy New Year to you!

Beautiful prayer. I specially liked the imagery described in:

“I launch my bark on the unknown waters of this year,
with Thee, O Father, as my harbour,
Thee, O Son, at my helm,
Thee, O Holy Spirit, filing my sails.”

I will add that to all my emails as a footer.

    Bless you

    Mercedes

    • Mercedes,
That same part stood out to me as well! I used it one day as my Facebook status, and wrote it in my 2010 journal. I’d really like to write it on the ceiling over my bed as a morning reminder!!

      Thanks for your encouragement! Linda
