Jesus’ Prayer – Part 2

John 17: 2,3
“For You granted Him authority over all people, that He might give eternal life to all those You have given to Him. Now this
is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

The tender and inseparable relationship between Jesus and the Father is consistently addressed in this prayer.  Jesus was sent by the Father, the Father draws people to the Son, Jesus submits to the Father, Jesus glorifies the Father, the Father glorifies the Son.  Beyond the words, from the heart of Jesus overflows a deep and abiding love and unity in purpose between Father and Son.  We see this~~

~~in verse two:  The Father gave His Son authority over all men, because of His love for His Son and for the world.   Jesus says in John 3:35:  “The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands.” (NIV)

“All things have been commited to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.” Luke 10:22 NIV

~~and in verse 3, where Jesus defines eternal life: “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes on Him, shall not perish but have eternal life.”  John 3:16 NIV

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.”  John 6:44 NIV

To know God and to know Jesus IS eternal life.  The Father first loved the world and sent Jesus, and Jesus’ deepest prayer is to reveal His Father to the world–to Us!
